{31 Days} Family Tree

Note:  Due to some unforeseen family illnesses, I am having to play catch-up on my 31 days challenge! Thank you for reading!

Day 10: Family Tree

For each of my grandmothers' birthdays this year, I created a sweet family tree. I found this cute idea on Pinterest and decided I could recreate it using Microsoft Word like I have on other word art projects here and here. By downloading a new font and playing around with word art, I was able to create three different trees with each of my grandmothers' kids and grand kids. They all loved this sentimental gift!!

Word art makes such a simple and sweet gift.

10 down! 21 to go!!

  1. Laura, did you make the cake? I have an event brewing in my mind and that cake is exactly what I want for it!

    1. I didn't make the cake but isn't it cute!! A local bakery made it. It was just a round layered cake with chocolate icing made to look like tree bark by using a fork. Cute and delicious!

  2. I think this is very intersting. Did you just move everything around to make it fit the tree or did you have a template?

    1. I don't have a template- I'm sorry. I created it by twisting the names, changing the shape of the word art in to a wave shape and moving them around into the tree shape!

  3. How did you make the words into objects that you could easily move around the page? I'm having trouble manipulating the words to change positions because they aren't considered objects, if that makes any sense.

    1. Be sure to choose Word Art instead of a text box. I'm not sure what version of Word you are using but in 2003 and 2007 I believe it is under Insert-Picture- and then Word Art. You can change the size by dragging the corners and you can rotate the words by clicking on the green dot in the top middle and twisting it to the direction you want. To change the shape, there is a toolbox that pops up when you click on your Word Art and by clicking on the funny shaped "A" you can choose a shape for the words to make. I hope this helps!!

  5. Becky- The font I used for the Family Tree is "Susie`s Hand". You can find it here- http://www.kevinandamanda.com/scrapbook/fonts/freescrapbookfonts/index5.html

  7. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS IDEA! Please tell me, am I right in thinking there are no spouses listed? Just sibs, right? Thank you for a wonderful gift idea - you're so talented!

    1. Hi Gabrielle,

The spouses are listed in the green off from the siblings. It's hard to tell in the picture but the spouses names are just a bit bigger than the grandchildren's names. And then for the grandchildren who are married, their spouses' names branch off from their name and are a hair smaller and then great grandchildren are even smaller. I hope that makes sense...

Thanks for your sweet note! Have a good day!

    1. Hello,

I created these as gifts for family and do not currently make them to sell. I found the idea from a great lady on Etsy. I've included a link to her shop below. I see that she does not currently have any listed for sell, but you may contact her to see if it is still something she does.

      Thank you!

  10. This is a really fun craft! Thank you for the instructions in the comments but I wondered what you used to make/add the scribble heart in the middle of the grandparent's names?

    1. Hi!

I found the heart by googling 'heart clip art' and then re-colored it a bit to get the pink color I wanted. Hope this helps!

  11. Has anyone been able to re-create this template? If so, would you mind sharing it with me?

  12. I was wondering if you printed this yourself or if you had it printed somewhere? I am not super tech savvy but wondered if you knew if this could be printed at Walgreens or something as a word document? Maybe in .jpeg form? This is great! Thanks for sharing!!!

    1. Hi! I printed these at home but you could easily send them to a local copy shop. I'm not 100% on the Walgreens idea but it may just work!!
